The only thing more exceptional than Purple Spiderwort's beautiful coloration is its incredible ease of care!

Purple Spiderwort (Tradescantia zebrina) is a tropical vine South America. It is a very popular houseplant that is so resilient that it can be kept successfully by almost anyone. Since it thrives in humid environments and has a very elegant appearance, Purple Spiderwort is also an excellent plant for the terrarium, vivarium, and paludarium.

Purple Spiderwort is a very prolific vine that is very easy to prune, so it can be used to create dramatic hanging streams of green and purple across the hardscape of the terrarium. It can be placed in virtually any area and will live under most levels of lighting, although it typically looks its best under bright light. It requires a rather moist environment to thrive, but it is much more forgiving of lack of humidity than many other rainforest plants.

Specialty fertilizers exist for houseplant use, but many such fertilizers can be harmful in a terrarium or paludarium. Purple Spiderwort is a versatile, adaptable plant and generally does not need supplemental fertilizers in terrarium, vivarium, and paludarium settings.

This listing is for the tissue culture form of Purple Spiderwort. Tissue cultures are superior to traditional forms of aquarium plants in many ways. They are produced in a completely sterile environment which eliminates the possibility of them carrying pest animals or algae spores. They have a shelf life (before introduction to the aquarium) of several months if properly maintained and they are housed in a nutrient gel until introduced to the terrarium. To introduce a tissue culture plant to the terrarium, simply rinse off as much nutrient gel as possible, then plant as usual. The nutrient gel will not harm your terrarium.
