Overview
The Gold Leopard Dojo Loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) is a highly prized and rare variant of the classic dojo loach, distinguished by its rich golden base color overlaid with intricate leopard-like patterning. This unique combination of color and movement creates a fish that feels both familiar and entirely elevated from the standard form.
Tank-bred for adaptability and resilience, this variant maintains the signature personality dojo loaches are known for—curious, interactive, and constantly in motion. It explores every layer of the aquarium, often weaving through plants, gliding along the substrate, and engaging with its environment in a way few fish do.
This is not just a bottom-dwelling fish. It is a centerpiece of behavior and interaction, bringing energy and personality into the aquarium while still fitting naturally within a thoughtfully designed layout.
⚠️ Important Legal Note: The Oriental Weatherfish aka Dojo Loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) is considered an invasive species in several U.S. states and is illegal to possess or sell in: Alabama, California, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and Wisconsin. The original dojo loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) is native to East Asia, where it inhabits slow-moving rivers, ponds, and floodplain environments. These habitats often feature soft substrates, vegetation, and organic debris, allowing the fish to burrow and forage naturally.
This gold leopard variant is selectively bred in captivity, combining the natural behavior of the species with enhanced coloration and pattern.
The Gold Leopard Dojo Loach thrives in aquascapes that feel open, soft, and interactive. This is a fish that moves with intention, constantly exploring its environment, so the layout should support that movement rather than restrict it.
A soft sand substrate is essential, allowing for natural burrowing and foraging behavior. Open areas should be balanced with structure, giving the fish pathways to move through while still providing areas of rest and cover.
Plants:
Choose hardy plants such as Java Fern and Anubias attached to wood or stone, as this species may disturb rooted plants. Background plants like Vallisneria can provide height and flow without crowding the substrate.
Hardscape:
Driftwood and smooth stones should be arranged to create open pathways and gentle structure. Avoid sharp edges and tight spaces, as this species benefits from freedom of movement.
Botanicals:
Aquatic Arts botanicals such as Indian Almond Leaves can be used to introduce a natural, leaf-littered environment. These elements add texture and subtle tannins while helping create a more grounded, natural feel.
This species is an opportunistic omnivore that feeds along the substrate. A diet of high-quality sinking pellets and wafers should be supplemented with protein-rich foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp.
Gold Leopard Dojo Loaches do well with peaceful, similarly sized fish that tolerate cooler water conditions. Avoid aggressive tank mates or very small species that may be disturbed or outcompeted.
Not considered shrimp safe. Smaller shrimp are likely to be eaten during natural foraging behavior.
Breeding is uncommon in home aquariums. Most specimens available in the hobby are tank-bred through controlled environments.

Shipping Schedule for this service
Current Handling Time:
1-9 business days
Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.
Shipping Rate
Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
