XXL Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus) on 8+ inch Driftwood
Skip months or over a year of waiting for growth with this massive 50+ leaf mat on driftwood!
Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus) is a very attractive, popular, and low-maintenance plant for the freshwater aquarium. In fact, it is possibly the most durable ornamental plant in the hobby! Its long, bright green leaves provide an attractive aquascape as well as important refuge and grazing area for shrimp and fish as well as fry. Unlike many plants, Java Fern attaches itself to and propagates on aquarium décor. We offer this exquisite plant attached to a sizeable 8+ inch driftwood piece which can be placed anywhere in the aquarium. These are well-established driftwood pieces with exceptional growth of 50+ leaves. These pieces could easily be the centerpiece of any aquarium.
Java Fern is relatively slow-growing, at least initially. It only requires low to moderate lighting and nutrient rich water, although its growth rate can be increased through CO2 injection/supplementation. It reproduces through rhizome division and the production of offshoots and thrives in most areas of the aquarium. Java Fern should not be planted with its rhizome (roots) buried in the substrate or it will rot and recede. Due to its delicate leaves, it should not be housed with large crayfish, medium to large cichlids, goldfish, or any other animals that will excessively pick at plants.
Like most plants, Java Fern will benefit from supplementation such as Seachem Flourish, Flourish Excel, Nitrogen and other plant supplements.
