Exochochromis anagenysi is a rarely seen predator hap from Lake Malawi. These juveniles were bred locally in Indianapolis by a highly experienced cichlid keeper, and we are proud to offer them exclusively at Aquatic Arts. While the juveniles currently show minimal coloration, photos of the stunning adult breeding pair are included on this listing so you can see their full potential. As they grow, expect brilliant iridescent blues, bold vertical markings, and an unmistakable torpedo-like body shape that makes them a commanding presence in any large cichlid setup.
What We Love About This Fish:
• Locally bred by a trusted cichlid specialist in Indianapolis
• Grows into a bold, shimmering predator with intense coloration
• Rarely available in the aquarium trade
• Adds high movement and presence to large Lake Malawi displays
Natural Habitat:
Exochochromis anagenysi is native to Lake Malawi’s open rocky waters, where it roams sandy and boulder-strewn areas hunting smaller fish. It thrives in mineral-rich, oxygenated water with plenty of open space for cruising.
Aquascaping:
• Plants: Not recommended—this species may ignore or disturb them
• Hardscape: Include rock piles, caves, and open sandy areas for swimming
• Botanicals: Optional—leaf litter or pods can be added for interest, though not native to Malawi
Diet and Feeding:
This carnivorous predator thrives on a high-protein, varied diet. Offer quality cichlid sticks, frozen krill, mysis shrimp, and other meaty foods to support growth and coloration. For a balanced staple, we highly recommend Ultra Fresh Royal Cichlid Premium Pellet – Shrimp Delight, which is packed with shrimp protein and natural attractants to support appetite and overall health. Avoid feeding fatty feeder fish, which can lead to long-term issues.
Tank Mates and Compatibility:
Best kept with other large, semi-aggressive Lake Malawi haps or mbuna. Smaller or slow-moving fish may be eaten or harassed. A spacious tank with hiding spots reduces territorial aggression.
Shrimp Safe:
❌ No – Not safe with shrimp or small ornamental fish.
Breeding:
This species is a maternal mouthbrooder. Males display vibrant color during courtship, clearing a spawning site where females lay and collect eggs in their mouths. The juveniles offered here are the offspring of the exact pair pictured in the listing.
Recommended Tank Parameters:
• Temperature: 76° - 82° F (24° - 28° C)
• pH: 7.8 – 8.6
• KH: 8 – 14 dKH
• Minimum Tank Size: 75 gallons for juveniles; 125+ gallons recommended for adults
Care Guidelines:
• Diet: Carnivorous – protein-rich foods required

Shipping Schedule for this service
Current Handling Time:
1-9 business days
Here at Aquatic Arts, we consider the welfare of the live animals we are shipping to be of the foremost importance. This process is much more involved than simply creating a shipping label and affixing it to a box. Depending on the order, it takes from 4 to 7 people to complete this process properly. We check the weather conditions here where they fly out of the Indianapolis UPS facility and the destination for each shipment. We start early each morning and go through a multi-step process to have the day's shipments prepared in time for the UPS pickup. The volume of orders in our system also affects the processing time. Therefore our stated handling time is 1-9 business days.
Shipping Rate
Pricing is by size of package needed to fill entire order and distance it must travel. It will be calculated at checkout.
