This placid little catfish is a very charming and unique schooling fish for the nano and planted community aquarium!

The Hummingbird Catfish (Rama chandramara), also known as the Hovering or Gold Shadow Catfish, is a unique little catfish that maintains a very small size and peaceful disposition. It has highly variable, mottled coloration according to its environment, especially the tone of the substrate. Its coloration will darken significantly on black or other dark-colored substrate. This fish lives in tight schools and inhabits waterways in India and Bangladesh.

The Hummingbird Catfish, like most catfish, is a predator, but it has a relatively small mouth and only grows to a size of 2 inches (5 cm). It might prey on smaller dwarf shrimp, but is otherwise compatible with virtually any other peaceful aquarium fish and invertebrates. This fish is very timid and must be kept in schools of 6 or more, though an even larger school is more optimal. It can sometimes be a picky eater and should be fed frozen and live meaty foods of appropriate size to start. It may accept dry foods in time, but should always be fed live and/or frozen foods as a significant part of its diet.

A well-established, heavily planted aquarium is the ideal setting for the Hummingbird Catfish. It prefers soft water since it is indigenous to blackwater habitats that are very rich in leaf litter. It will always be more active and outgoing when plenty of cover is present. It is sensitive to sudden changes in water parameters so regular maintenance is a must. Once established, it is usually a fairly resilient fish, but it is certainly more sensitive than many larger catfish. Successful spawning in the aquarium has not yet been widely achieved or reported.
