The Atlantic Mudskipper is a ultra-unique, oddball brackish species that is very uncommon in the aquarium hobby!
The Atlantic Mudskipper (Periophthalmus barbarus) is a very rare oddball species that is found in mangrove swamps throughout the West African coastline. The Atlantic Mudskipper is a fascinating, rare fish that is a great candidate for the ultimate oddball fish keeper. This unique fish spends time both on land and in water, so an area for them to get out of the water is required. This specific mudskipper species develops a gorgeous blue dorsal fin and blue dots around the face area.
The Atlantic Mudskipper is a predator in nature, so avoid tankmates that are small enough to be considered prey. It is known to accept frozen and live meaty foods of appropriate size. This fish typically does not accept dry foods. As long as it is kept in a well-maintained, mature aquarium, the Atlantic Mudskipper is a hardy and entertaining fish. It will feed on land as well as in the water. It will not bother aquarium plants. While it can live temporarily in full freshwater conditions, it requires at least lightly brackish water for long-term health and we maintain this species in brackish water at our facility.
The Atlantic Mudskipper is highly territorial with conspecifics, so it best to keep them as a single fish or a large group to dilute aggression.
